Music Box: Prince – Partyman/Let’s Go Crazy (Tower Records, West Hollywood, CA 3.21.06)

Prince Shreds On “Let’s Go Crazy” at Tower Records in West Hollywood 3.21.06

Three years later, and the loss of one of the singular pioneers in the history of Rock N Roll still stings as if we just heard the news. Ubiquitous for decades, that he’s not here to continue to gift us with his music is still hard to fathom.

Thankfully, there is a treasure trove of unreleased content, including rarities that many of us possess, but few, if anyone, have ever seen.

In 2006, to promote the release of his new album, 3121, Prince played an in-store at Tower Records in West Hollywood, on Sunset. He played a 40 minute set at close to midnight, and it was electrifying. His astonishing band included Cara Coleman-Dunham on drums, Josh Dunham on bass, Morris Hayes on keys, Tamar Davis on vocals. Legendary Sheila E and guitarist Mike Scott were his guests.

The set list was:
Play That Funky Music
Rock Steady
Beautiful Strange
Redhead Stepchild
Te Amo Corazon
Purple Rain
Let’s Go Crazy

The only complete footage of that in-store performance that I have is for Partyman and Let’s Go Crazy (which was featured as a mash-up with Purple Rain, which, sadly, was not recorded fully). I edited them together to create this gorgeous moment in time.

It’s a cliche to call him a genius, but cliches are cliches because they are truth.

Continue to Rest in Purple, beautiful one.
